Iya Sako

Iya Sako is a djembe fola, or djembe master, from the Wassalon region of Upper Guinea in West Africa. Of Malinké origin, Iya started playing Dun Dun for the farmers in his village at the age of nine.

Throughout his life he has become a very accomplished and well-respected djembe fola in his own country and abroad, and has played with many high-profile djembe folas in Africa and the UK.

Iya has performed with a number of talented African artists since arriving in the UK this year, at events such as Drum Camp, WOMAD, Mela, Tribe of Doris, Rhythm and Grooves Festival, and African Drum Village, including Famoudou Konaté during his first visit to the UK in 2007.

Iya is now resident in the UK, and Rhythmbridge Foundation is especially priviledged to have him as a teacher for our djembe and dundun classes.
